How to dispute an error on your credit report

Table of Contents

It can be stressful and frustrating to find errors in your credit reports. However, you do have the right to dispute them. First, request a free copy from all three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can do this at annualcreditreport.com. You should carefully review these reports for inaccuracies such as incorrect account balances, incorrect small-business loan accounts, or account status information.

Contact the credit bureau if you discover an error in one of your reports, whether it is a small mistake like an incorrect address or a large mistake like someone using your identity to commit fraud. Either fill out an online form or write a letter to the credit bureau and send it by regular mail. Email can prove unreliable. Be sure to identify incorrect items and attach supporting documentation (such as bills with payment history). You can contact the bureau to report any discrepancies and request dispute documentation.

How to dispute credit report errors

You don’t need to hire a lawyer to dispute your credit report. Credit report errors can be disputed on your own or with the help of the company that provided it. The company will investigate any dispute and make a report to the credit bureaus. If you dispute an item that is listed as paid but believes it to be a mistake, send the company copies of all supporting evidence and a letter explaining why you want the item removed from your credit reports. If you have two bills that were paid in the same month, arrange a payment plan with your creditor within 30 days. Also, if your bill was incorrectly billed due to fraud or identity theft, send copies and evidence supporting your claim.

Do not delay: Call the Credit Bureau today.

Talk to representatives from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax/Experian/TransUnion) to speed up the process. It is important to act quickly if you notice an error in your credit report. Creditors may need proof from landlords or employers before deciding whether someone should be able to get a loan or lease an apartment.
